Mahabodhi Phandeyling
Nunnery
The Buddha gave
an opportunity to women to prove their worth, capability and
capacity to attain the highest possible in the religious way of
life.
But nuns in
Ladakh did not enjoy any status or opportunity to study and practice
the Buddhist teachings in an organized way.
Ven. Sanghasena established the Mahabodhi Nunnery to improve
the poor living conditions of the nuns and restore their self-esteem
and dignity in society.
Previously
non-existent, a comprehensive secular and religious education is now
provided to young nuns in a safe and healthy, spiritual environment.
The Mahabodhi
Nunnery was established in 1996 with the kindness and support of
Buddha's Light International Association.
Situated in a stretch of dry and desert land nestled among
the copper mountains of the vast Devachan campus, a new prayer hall,
residence rooms, a small dining hall and kitchen were constructed.
Eight young nuns
are receiving their monastic training which includes the practice of
Vipassana meditation, study of basic Buddhist philosophy, Buddhist
history, Ladakhi, Tibetan, English and Pali languages.
They attend regular school with the other children too.
The Mahabodhi
Nuns are trained to be meditation teachers, community leaders,
religious administrators and healers.
They will be encouraged to shoulder leadership
responsibilities in carrying out the various educational, medical,
spiritual and charity projects in the campus.
This will enable them to play a significant role in promoting
the welfare and preservation of the cultural heritage of the
Ladakhis.
Help
is required to reach our target of building the facilities to
accommodate 30 nuns, together with a kitchen, dining hall and
reception.
